Journée mondiale contre le cancer

Less than one year after the launch of the Website, the Quebec Cancer Foundation is unveiling brand new rooms in each of its lodging centres. The warm and friendly living spaces are a home away from home for the Foundation’s youth clientele.

After opening a first modern, youth-centred Chambre à Félix in 2013 in Sherbrooke, the Trois-Rivières, Gatineau and Montreal lodging centres have now followed suit.

The new rooms are part of a special Quebec Cancer Foundation initiative known as the Programme à Félix. It originated with Hélène Deslauriers and Benoît Hallée, who wanted to honour the last wishes of their son Félix, who passed away from cancer at the age of 20. Shortly before his death, Félix told his loved ones that he didn’t want them to just talk about cancer; he wanted them to do something about it and make sure that young people and their families had the support they needed. Backed by the Foundation, the program now offers various services adapted to people 15 to 39, including information via its Info-cancer hotline, a telephone peer matching service with youth who have had cancer, physical wellness programs (massage therapy, kinesiology) and, of course, lodging tailored to their reality.

Every year, many young people call upon its services. One of them was Josée Frenette (to the right), from Rouyn-Noranda: “After I was diagnosed with cancer, the hardest part was being away from my 2-year-old daughter, given how close we’ve been from the time she was born. Today, she understands that mommy has to go away because she has “a booboo that needs to be looked after.” My stay in the Chambre à Félix gives me the chance to rest in a place other than a hospital setting. Every weekend, my little sweetie eagerly waits for me. After my stay in the Chambre à Félix, I’m in a good state of mind when I greet her.”

Youth 15 to 39 living with cancer, along with their loved ones, can obtain psychological support and answers to their questions about the disease, its treatments or any other specific concerns about their condition, by calling 1 800 363-0063 or writing to A nurse or documentation specialist with experience in oncology will be there to listen and refer people to the best resources.
